How does ‘art’ come into being? Perhaps the interplay among our diverse approaches to this question carries more weight than the question itself. By foregrounding this plurality, a space is opened in which artists, viewers, and curators alike can participate equally in the ongoing dialogue around what constitutes the ‘happening’ of art. This shared inquiry enables a collective negotiation of meaning, built on mutual recognition and respect.

In such a framework, the emergence of art need not be seen as the result of a singular authorial claim or institutional gesture. Rather, it may arise through the dynamic interrelation of individual perspectives—what I think, what you think, what she or he considers to be the moment of art’s occurrence. If you, like some others—perhaps even myself—believe that something akin to ‘art’ is happening here and now, then that belief is part of the work’s formation.

Conversely, should you feel that this context bears no relation to the happening of art, then perhaps this is, for you, an unnecessary circumstance—an extraneous condition consuming time in pursuit of an ‘art’ that, in your view, is absent. Such a possibility is not dismissed, but rather embraced as part of the wider ecology of responses that shape and unsettle the question: how does art happen
